Hemorrhoids FAQs

What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are usually caused due to enlarged and inflamed veins located inside and outside the anus and rectum. It can be a painful condition that is usually accompanied by bleeding, itching, and discomfort during sitting.

Internal hemorrhoids can be painless, but they usually cause bleeding during excretion. However, external and Thrombosed hemorrhoids can be extremely painful. So, if you experience any severe symptoms, it is recommended to consult with our hemorrhoid specialist in Manhattan, NY for expert assistance.

What are the symptoms of hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids can be of 3 types – internal, external, and Thrombosed hemorrhoids. Following are the common symptoms that patients may experience if they suffer from hemorrhoids:

Symptoms of internal hemorrhoids Internal hemorrhoids are usually located inside the rectum and cause the following symptoms:

  • Straining or irritation when passing stool
  • Blood in the stool or toilet paper
  • Sometimes the tissue becomes swollen and may bulge outside the anal opening. It can be painful, but it usually goes back inside on its own.

Symptoms of External HemorrhoidsExternal hemorrhoids usually cause the following symptoms:

  • Swollen veins underneath the skin around the anus
  • Itchiness and pain
  • Occasional rectal bleeding
  • Hard lumps near the anus that feel sore and painful when sitting

Symptoms of Thrombosed hemorrhoidsA blood clot in the external hemorrhoids may cause a purple or blue lump, which is called thrombosis or Thrombosed hemorrhoid. Its symptoms are usually the same as external hemorrhoids, such as:

  • Severe pain
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Itching
  • Hard lumps in the anus

When to consult with a hemorrhoid specialist?

Hemorrhoids are usually diagnosed based on the physical examination of the anus and rectum by a hemorrhoid specialist. The doctor will check for any lumps, swelling, irritation, or other symptoms. The doctor may also carry out a digital rectal examination if needed.

There are also other conditions that may cause hemorrhoid-like symptoms. Therefore, the doctor may also conduct further tests such as an Anoscopy, a Sigmoidoscopy, or a Colonoscopy to rule out the risk of any other serious conditions.

What are the diagnosis and tests for hemorrhoids?

Although hemorrhoid may not be a life-threatening disease in most cases and the symptoms usually go away within a week or two, if the symptoms persist for more than two weeks, it is best to consult with a physician for reliable hemorrhoid treatment. There are also other health conditions such as Colon cancer, Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative colitis, or gastrointestinal disorders, which may cause hemorrhoid-like symptoms but can pose a severe health risk.

Therefore, it is crucial not to ignore these symptoms and consult with a certified healthcare specialist. Sometimes surgery may be required to resolve the hemorrhoids problem. At Asira Medical, we offer surgical and non-surgical treatment options for patients suffering from mild to severe hemorrhoids.
